Ruth Lambert is an accomplished and versatile jazz singer equally at home in front of a big band as she is here with her quintet. Ruth and her musicians were a sensation at this years Sage Gateshead International Jazz Festival when they appeared as part of the Jazzaction  Showcase

A regular at the Glasgow International Jazz Festival, Ruth is joined by regional musicians Andy Champion (double bass), Tim Johnston (drums) Paul Edis (piano) and Graeme Wilson (saxophones) performing an impressive repertoire of standards from the great American songbook.

Ruth has performed in a wide variety of settings, from large concert halls to intimate jazz clubs, and can provide jazz for any occasion. Her ever-expanding repertoire includes over 160 jazz standards, which she performs with a variety of ensembles from piano duo up to big band. She cites her main influences as Julie London, Anita O’Day, Carmen McRae and Chet Baker.

Ruth has recently returned home to Tyneside after completing an Honours Degree Course at the University of Strathclyde in Applied Music, having gained a First Class Degree.  During her time at Strathclyde, she was awarded the Alexander Stone Scholarship for Excellence in Solo Performance.

She has been singing Jazz for five years in Scotland, and was able to fund herself through university in the process.  During this time, she had the privilege of working with some of Scotland’s finest jazz musicians, including Nigel Clarke and Brian Kellock.  She is as at home in front of a Big Band as she is fronting a small jazz ensemble and has sung with various big bands including the George McGowan Orchestra.   Ruth was awarded a Special Commendation for soloists at the Boosey and Hawkes Big Band Competition of 2000 in Glasgow. She is currently singing with the Customs House Big Band in South Shields and has recently recorded an album with them, released in May 2006.

Previously, she worked as a community musician, being proficient on several musical instruments, and as a vocal and instrumental teacher. She is presently singing jazz in the Tyneside area and Scotland, fronting her own quintet, as well as lecturing on a local degree course in vocal technique and jazz improvisation. She is also a vocal coach at the Sage, Gateshead.

Ruth enjoys working with a variety of well-respected jazz musicians in the Newcastle area but returns regularly to Scotland to gig with her Scottish band at Blackfriars in Glasgow and also makes regular appearances with the Chris Clarke Quartet. She has been a regular performer at the Glasgow International Jazz Festival for the past six years and has also appeared at the Isle of Bute Jazz Festival.

This year, she has performed at the Sage, Gateshead, with her quartet as part of the Gateshead international Jazz Festival. Her local residencies include a highly successful run at the Gala Millenium Theatre in Durham and at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, fronting Newcastle-based trio ‘Jazz Girl’. She recently completed a weekly four year residency at Glasgow’s Inn on the Green with pianist Scott Madden.

Ruth has an impressive repertoire of standards from the great American songbook. She has a voice of great warmth and maturity and brings a fresh interpretation with a charismatic delivery to well loved classics such as those penned by Cole Porter and Harold Arlen. Her first solo album ‘So Many Stars’ and her new album 'Easy Street' have been released on the Jazz Action label.
